Effects of (diffuse) contaminants in the food chain

The presence of toxic contaminants in the food chain will remain an important issue for the coming decades. This includes contaminants like PCB’s and POPs (persistent Organic Pollutants) but also compounds of natural origin like mycotoxins and other toxins. Development of biomarker techniques and advanced analytical tools to investigate complex mixtures are priorities

The research topics under this theme are as follows:

-           Understanding and detection of toxic effects of low levels of (mixtures of) diffuse contaminants from the environment ton early development of man and wildlife species.

SP: AJ Murk and JHJ van den Berg

-           Estimation of the environmental impact and toxicity of chlorinated paraffins in the marine food chain.

This study is performed withing the framework of the EU-MODELKEY project; Location: IMARES IJmuiden

PhD: T. Russina, SP: P Korytàr, J. de Boer, AJ Murk and I.M.C.M. Rietjens

-                      Unravelling the mechanism of differential biological responses induced by food-borne xeno- and phyto-estrogenic compounds.

PhD: A. Sotoca Cavaleda, promotion 2010; SP: A.J. Murk,  J. Vervoort (Bioch.), I.M.C.M. Rietjens.

-                      Development of cost-effective tools for risk management and traceability systems for marine biotoxins in seafood.

PhD: A. Gerssen, promotion 2008. SP: J.de Boer (RIVO), J.A. van Rhijn (RIKILT), I.M.C.M.Rietjens

-           Development of in vivo bioassays with early life stages (including metamorphosis) of Sole for detecting endocrine disrupting compounds in the marine food chain.

This study is performed withing the framework of the EU-MODELKEY project; location IMARES Den Helder and/or IJmuiden.

PhD: E. Foekema, SP: AJ Murk

-           Development of (bio)analytical screening tools for the identification of structural alerts for genotoxicity in food.

PhD: promotion 2012

SP: Ivonne Rietjens, Ruud Woutersen (TNO) en William van Dongen (TNO
